San Diego HIllcrest Farmers Market

SoCal Local Favorite Farmer’s Market Finds

If you’ve spent much time in Southern California, then you already know that Farmer’s Markets are kind of a big deal. Here is in San Diego we can find farmer’s Markets in a different neighborhood every single day of the week.

Think Global, Shop Local

One of my personal long-time favorite local markets is the Hillcrest Farmer’s Market on Sundays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. They pride themselves on being “Fresh + fabulous just like Hillcrest” – and I agree! It is an easy, convenient, and fun way to shop for organic and sustainable, hand-crafted and grown goods.

I’ve been a regular at this market for over a decade, and I’ve watched it grow from a parking lot event to a two-block, double row of tents crafted goods extravaganza. The event now features a “food court” that is the envy of any mall around – I know I’m not the only one that shows up to get my favorite “Green-Fix” smoothie – a long time staple of this market.

Find Old Favorites and New Ones

You can feel good about indulging in the tempting aromas of some of the choices around for a quick bite – like the Flamin Salmon BBQ booth – not only is salmon a great choice for lunch, but I watched this vendor provide a complimentary meal to one of San Diego’s Finest who was on duty protecting the local area. These are the types of authentic, community-focused businesses that you can feel good about buying from.

Some of my other favorite things to get here include locally grown produce, farm fresh eggs, and several of the unique and healthy dips & sauces. I am a huge fan of dips and sauces in general since they help me create healthy recipes that are more palatable.

It seems like every visit to this versatile marketplace I find an opportunity to learn or try something new.

I’d be remiss not to mention the plethora of artisan goods + gifts – from jewelry, pottery, clothing, and home décor, there is truly something for everyone.

Also in Uptown on Thursdays: The North Park Farmer’s Market – check back with us later for an update on our visit to 30th Street & North Park Way.
